May was relatively quiet in France. Raids and artillery duels were the typical fare, as journalists speculated on what would happen next.

On May 21, the Ottoman Empire launched an invasion of Armenia. But the United States wasn’t at war with the Turks, so that didn’t get a lot of notice here.

Through the month there were repeated stories speculating about where a German blow would fall next. That state remained until May 27 when the blow finally fell. On that date the Germans launched Operation Blucher-Yorck, the third phase of their spring offensive and triggering the Third Battle of the Aisne.
