MOUNT VERNON — The First Friday season officially kicked off Friday night with the theme of “Summer Celebration,” as people filled downtown Mount Vernon despite the threat of rain earlier in the afternoon.

There were many changes made to the monthly gathering this year, including the addition of a Beer Garden and Kids’ Entertainment, as well as the re-organization of vendors and the car show.

Arguably one of the largest attractions of the evening was the Beer Garden, located on West Vine Street. David Stein, owner of Stein Brewing Co. (as well as Dave’s Cosmic Subs and The Joint), said that he was approached by Main Street Mount Vernon about the idea. MSMV was looking for ways to attract more people and ages to First Friday, and Stein thought it would be a good way to preview the brewing company and the fun things he would like to do in downtown.
