MOUNT VERNON — Carolyn S. “Susie” Shaffer, 73, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Oct. 18, 1944, in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Oscar and Wilda (Winterringer) Jones. Carolyn retired from the Mount Vernon Developmental Center. She was an avid animal lover, took great pride in her flower and vegetable garden, but most important to her was the quality time she spent with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, John Shaffer, whom she married on Sept. 8, 1979; her children, Larry (Jennifer) Stringfellow Jr. of Marion, Tommy Stringfellow of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Christine Stringfellow of Mount Vernon; step children, Darcy (Eugene) Guglielmi of Westerville, Jordan Shaffer of Mount Vernon and Kelly (Dan) Fisher of Mount Vernon; 15 grandchildren, Amanda Camp, Ashley Stringfellow, Cash Stringfellow, Craig Stringfellow, Corey Stringfellow, Kara Stringfellow, Shawn Guglielmi, Anthony Guglielmi, Frankie Guglielmi, Brittany Guglielmi, Nicholas Guglielmi, Lucy Guglielmi, Logan Fisher, Ashton Fisher and Landon Fisher; three brothers, Butch Jones of Mount Vernon, Buck Jones of Texas and Joe Jones of Texas; three sisters, Paula Sholar, Scottie Sholar, and Monica Simpson, all of Texas; and her canine companion, Chief.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Patricia Marti and Barbara Jones.

Friends may call on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions in Carolyn’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Knox County Animal Shelter.
