MOUNT VERNON — The city of Mount Vernon gave official approval to donate the majority of the former American National Can property to the Knox County Land Bank, during Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

The ordinance gives the land bank, 28.117 acres, which will be cleaned up by the Area Development Foundation in order to market the property for sale or lease for development.

“We are ready to go,” Harris said. “This American National Can site is a critical feature, and I think, of the highest priority for the city of Mount Vernon, in terms of our Siemens redevelopment strategy. Really, I think, ground zero for economic development in Mount Vernon going forward, probably for the next decade, will be Seimens/American National Can site.”
