PICKERINGTON — If there was ever a time for the Danville Blue Devils to get a big performance on the mound, Wednesday was the day. Pitcher Sammie Lavender gave the Devils just that, with a complete game two-hitter with five strikeouts.

Lavender, who yielded five walks, gave the Blue Devils just enough to defeat the Lucasville Valley Indians in their team’s Division IV regional semifinal, 2-1, at Pickerington Central High School. The win puts the Blue Devils in the regional finals for the fourth consecutive year.

Just a few days ago, however, Lavender’s performance seemed a bit unlikely. She might have just as easily ended up staying home and in bed with the flu.
