Allison Glass/News Mount Vernon High School Juniors have made a significant impact in their local community, with the help of a “Be the Change” project in Jill McClure’s English classes. Students held toy drives, adopted bee hives, held corn hole tournaments to raise money for breast cancer research, along with many other service projects. Hanna Sims, left, and Kirstyn Conrad, collected approximately 3,000 books to donate to homeless shelters in the area through the project.

On a whirlwind four-day trip through Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon High School history teacher and City Councilman Jeff Gottke’s AP government classes were able to get a close look at how domestic and international government operates.
