MOUNT VERNON — Three new patrol officers will join the Mount Vernon Police Department next month with two hitting the road immediately for field training, according to Chief Roger Monroe.
Paige Wilt, James Coffey and Austin Johnston will be sworn in June 8. Wilt and Coffey will begin training June 10. Johnston will start four months of schooling at Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in late June. Following training and certification, he will also work with current police officers for a three-month period before maintaining solo work in the city. All three are subject to a one-year probationary period, Monroe said.
The funding for one of the officers is due to the city’s promise to provide one additional officer if the income tax levy was approved by voters in November 2017.
