NEWARK — You’ll always savor the first time.

The Centerburg baseball team finally gets an opportunity to call itself district champ. The Trojans held on to beat Fisher Catholic, 5-4, in the Division IV district finals Thursday at Newark’s Don Edwards Park and capture the first district baseball title in school history.

“It’s awesome. Ever since I was a freshman, coach Joe (Smith) always emphasized at the beginning of every season being district champs. That’s what we’re shooting for,” said Centerburg third baseman Trey Purdy. “And, if we get there, we know that we’re a solid team. We proved that by beating two really, really good teams. I never expected this. I’m just so proud of everybody.”
