MOUNT VERNON — The city’s Board of Zoning Appeals approved variances for size and the rear property line setback to allow a Park Street resident to build a new garage.

Scott Brown, 207 N. Park St., told the board he wants to build a new pole barn garage, replacing an old building he tore down a couple years ago.

The footers for the old building can still be seen and he wanted to place the new structure in roughly the same spot, which would have required a side variance as well.

The board granted the variance from the 5 feet normally required at the back of the property — it will be about a foot off the line while the old building was a couple inches closer — but asked him to move it to be five feet from the side property lines, which he agreed to do.
