MOUNT VERNON — What was expected to be a quiet discussion on the proposed changes to the city’s sign and address codes became briefly heated Monday evening when Councilman Chris Menapace all but accused Safety-Service Director Joel Daniels of giving preferential treatment to the owner of Connell’s Furniture.

During the committee hearing on the measure, which was on the agenda for a second reading, Menapace said he was concerned that Connell’s already has a sign up that would not meet either the existing code or the new code and asked if they would be passing a measure that would require a variance from the Board of Zoning Appeals before the new code is in effect.

Daniels said Connell’s had approached the BZA for a variance earlier this month, but the sign Connell’s wants to erect on the front of the former MC Sports building was already erected.
