COLUMBUS — For a long time, Mount Vernon High School’s gymnasium — The Hive — has been well known in the central Ohio area as home to one of the craziest student sections in basketball.

Opponents know coming in to Mount Vernon’s gymnasium that the atmosphere will be loud and supportive of the home team.

On Friday, the rest of the state took notice.

The Hive’s student section was named winner of the Golden Megaphone by the Ohio High School Athletic Association during a ceremony at halftime of the Division II boys basketball state semifinals Friday at Ohio State University.

“I’ve been a part of The Hive since I was a freshman and have been able to see the changes and watch it grow into the environment it is now,” said senior Lauren Keaton, a student leader of The Hive. “Winning is the best. It’s a testament to how everyone has worked so hard. It’s a big accomplishment.”
