UTICA — The father of a Utica man who killed three people in a mass shooting in Kirkersville was found not guilty March 20 by a Licking County judge of violating a protection order.

Licking County Municipal Court Judge David Stansbury found that Harry Hartless, 75, Utica, did not recklessly violate the terms of a protection order barring him from coming within 500 feet of Utica Care Center, Utica.

The protection order was filed by a nurse who worked at Pine Kirk nursing home in Kirkersville, the site of a May 12, 2017 mass shooting perpetrated by Hartless’ son, Thomas Hartless. Thomas Hartless killed two employees of Pine Kirk nursing home in Kirkersville and the village police chief before killing himself.

The Utica Care Center is a sister nursing home to Pine Kirk.

Harry Hartless was visiting a friend who lives within 400 feet of the nursing home when the alleged violation occurred.
