MOUNT VERNON — Double the numbers, double the excitement.

At least that’s what Mount Vernon track coach Kathy Thayer is hoping for.

Thayer is taking over the both the boys and girls’ programs this year after leading just the girls team for several and is excited about the influx of athletes on both sides.

“The large turnout this year really helps the team when coaches look at the depth of each event. More athletes equals more options when thinking about how to earn the most points at meets, as well as providing the athletes with the best scenario to build upon their understanding of the sport and gain experience,” Thayer said.

Of the 110 athletes participating this year, 65 are on the girls’ side. Even though 24 of them are new to the team, Thayer does have a good bit of experience back and that experience is balanced throughout the events.
