MOUNT VERNON — An otherwise routine Mount Vernon City School District Board of Education meeting turned emotional Monday evening when the topic of school safety and security was introduced for public comment.

The board heard comments for Resolution No. 22-18, an Ohio resolution which “implores government agencies to prioritize the protection of student through various services, safety measures, training and other means.”

Following the decision of the East Knox Local Schools BOE to pass a resolution that will potentially arm staff members Thursday, many MVCSD community members spoke out at the meeting against similar resolutions in this district. Community member and parent of children growing up in the MVCSD area, Leeman Kessler, said to the board, “As far as I’m concerned, the fewer guns we have in schools, the safer my children will be.”
