MOUNT VERNON — Dennis A. Long, 79, of Mount Vernon, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 19, 1939, in Lima, to the late Arthur (Clara) Long and the late Chloe (Cooper) Long.

Dennis was a member of the Brandon Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He served in the United States Navy and was a Columbus City Firefighter for 31 years, retiring in 1996. He served the community as owner and operator of Dennis Long Heating and Air Conditioning which is continued on by his son, Grant. He served many years as a hunter safety instructor for the state of Ohio as well as an avid hunter.

He is survived by his wife of 59 plus years, Alice (Jolly) Long; his four children, Grant (Connie) Long of Utica, Gregory (Diana) Long of Mount Vernon, Rebecca (Joe) Daubenmier of Indiana and G. Thomas (Susan) Long of Mount Vernon; brothers, Douglas (Louzella) Long of Utica and Michael Long of Nevada, cousin Sara Corbett of Arizona who he considered a sister; 11 grandchildren, Melissa, Jacob, Eric, Justin, Canyon, Kasey, Cullen, Jennifer, Hannah, Caira and Allyson; nine great-grandchildren with two on the way; sister-in-law, Sally (Linton) Long-Moran of Frazeysburg.

Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, David Long.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with a Masonic Service to follow at Lasater Funeral Home, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road in Mount Vernon. Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brandon Baptist Church with viewing at 10 a.m. with Pastor Marvin Haught officiating. Burial will follow in Brandon Cemetery with military graveside honors being conducted by the Knox County Joint Veteran’s Council.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hospice of North Central Ohio Chaplain program.
