MOUNT VERNON — As the opioid epidemic grips the county, encountering families and loved ones grieving someone lost to an overdose is becoming more common. To help those grieving, a new Grievers of Overdose support group will be starting at the Hospice of Knox County.

The support group was started by Kathy Wantland, bereavement coordinator of Hospice of Knox County; Melissa Body, program director of The Freedom Center; and Adonyah Whipple, clinical nurse specialist at Knox Community Hospital. The idea for it came about when the three were discussing concerns about different things within the community, explained Wantland. She said they had all noticed people working through their grief of a loved one lost to an overdose, but many times these people didn’t feel comfortable in regular support groups.
