MOUNT VERNON — Edgewood Road was again a major topic of discussion at Mount Vernon City Council Monday, even though the first public meeting to gather information about what can be done about traffic in the area is set for 6:30 p.m. today in the third floor ballroom at the Memorial Building.

Council members quizzed City Engineer Brian Ball on why he wants to hire an engineering consultant for the project, and residents of the area took the opportunity to oppose the hiring of a consultant and instead act to slow down traffic.

Ball explained that the consultant is needed to “look at the options, select alternatives, collect data and other services.”

He said the firm they want to hire has prepared some display information for tonight’s meeting, but he doesn’t know if representatives will be there since he is not comfortable asking them to attend when they are not under contract.
