MOUNT VERNON — The sign outside Danville High School’s gym could have read: “Wanted. Two quality boys basketball teams for sectional semifinal. Defenses need not apply.”
The Danville Blue Devils scored 29 points in the first period, while they and the visiting Ridgedale Rockets put up a combined 87 by halftime. Danville’s defense finally stepped up in the second half, carrying the team to a 76-58 victory.
“We gave up 41 points in the first half. That half of basketball was terrible,” Danville coach Matt Moore said. “Those guys knew that.”
Of course, there’s another way to look at it, too.
Both Danville and Ridgedale seemingly couldn’t miss a shot in the early going. The teams traded off layups and 3-pointers like a couple of Pokemon card players. At the midway point in the second period, the Devils and the Rockets had combined for 25 of 38 (65.8 percent) from the floor, as well as 9 of 12 from three-point range and a perfect 13 for 13 from the foul line.
