Fred Main/News Utica’s Emily Londot (13) is fouled by Pleasant’s Ashley James, left, during Saturday’s Division III sectional tournament game. Londot scored 24 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Redskins fell to the Spartans, 41-36.

UTICA — Despite an off night offensively, the Utica girls basketball team was in position to win a sectional title.

The Redskins trailed fifth-seeded Marion Pleasant 36-35 with under two minutes to go. But, the Spartans made the plays when they needed to and escaped with a 41-36 upset of the fourth-seeded Redskins in Division III Sectional final play Saturday.

“It’s hard to coach these girls for four years and then see it end this way. I really thought with the talent we had on the floor, I thought we could make a run in the tournament,” said Utica coach Terry Logue.
