MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Nazarene University has hosted many sports teams in its history. None were quite as special as the one at Ariel Arena on Thursday.

MVNU hosted the Ohio Special Olympics regional skills competition at their basketball arena for the first time Thursday. Twenty-nine athletes took part in the evening’s activities. Most were from Knox County, but some were from Ashland and Richland counties.

“It’s really good to have this event here,” said MVNU Coordinator of Development Paul McNeal.

The athletes participated in free-throw and distance shooting, dribbling drills and passing drills. Each athlete was placed in a division of 3-4, matching them up by comparing age and physical ability. Afterward, they were each presented a ribbon and invited to stay for a pizza party.
