MOUNT VERNON — David Stein is at it again and has announced that he will be opening a third restaurant — The Joint — in Mount Vernon soon.

Stein has been working on opening a brewery, Stein’s Brewing Company at the Woodward as well as a sub shop first started in Cleveland, Dave’s Cosmic Subs located at 222 S. Main St. The Joint will be opening at the location of the recently closed Athens Greek Restaurant located on the Mount Vernon Public Square, 1 West High.

Stein explained that his decision to open a third restaurant in the Mount Vernon downtown was three fold. First, he joked, he’s partially insane. Secondly, he loved the space that Athens Greek Restaurant left behind, and felt it was a great opportunity when he discovered it while walking by one day. Finally, he felt that the downtown food scene is missing a few things and thought it was time to remedy that.

Unlike Dave’s Cosmic Subs, The Joint is not part of a larger chain and will be completely Stein’s creation. He explained that he wants The Joint to feel like a modern version of a classic ’50s diner. Though much of the menu hasn’t been officially released, Stein said that the options on the menu come from his own “piecing together” of options that he wanted in town that weren’t available in the way he wanted. For example, Stein explained that though there are ice cream options, he was looking for a more hand-dipped ice cream parlor with really good milkshakes. Burgers in the style of Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Philly Cheese Steak, a reuben, a tender loin sandwich, which he plans to call the Big MV, and gourmet hot dog options will also be on the menu, according to Stein. He explained that he plans to serve premium, authentic versions of classics. Items like the reuben will be customizable to give the meal a “choose-your-own-adventure” vibe.

The Joint will also be outfitted with the newest technology according to Stein. Just like Dave’s Cosmic Subs, online ordering will be available. Stein explained that he hoped to meet the needs of people working at the businesses in downtown who need more “quick service” options. Online ordering will take that quick service one step further. The Joint will also have a Pepsi Freestyle machine which Stein explained just recently became available for privately-owned businesses.

Stein is projecting that The Joint will open March 26. The space is currently undergoing renovations. In a Facebook post on @CosmicDaveMV, Stein said that he expects Dave’s Cosmic Subs to open between April 15 and May 5. Stein shared Tuesday on the Stein Brewing Company’s Facebook page, @SteinBrewCo that he expects construction at the brewery to start within 10 to 14 days.

Because the brewery’s kitchen will likely not be open right when the brewery opens, Stein is also working with his other two restaurants and restaurants in the downtown area to figure out a carry out option so that customers at the brewery can have a meal with their drinks. He said he was not sure at this time how that carry-out option will work, but said he was excited to promote other downtown businesses until his kitchen could be opened.

Hiring will also be taking place very quickly according to Stein. He said that he plans to pay “above average” wages and is also planning to implement communal tipping so that every employee can make a little extra cash.
