MOUNT VERNON — After last month’s announcement that JCPenney would be closing in May, corporate offices have received an influx of calls from consumers in Knox County, hoping to save the clothing store.

Last month, the News reported the store’s upcoming closing, which is set for “on or about May 12,” with liquidation of the store beginning on March 5. Representatives of JCPenney’s corporate office wrote in a statement to the News that the decision to close the Mount Vernon store was made after a regular review of their stores across the country.

The same statement was given to Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis. The statement also explained that during their review, “the decision was made to close eight stores across the country.”
