U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown said Wednesday that both he and Sen. Rob Portman will fight any attempt to eliminate or cut the Great Lakes Initiative in the 2019 budget.
President Trump tried to eliminate funding for the program in 2018, but Congress restored the funds, and in his 2019 budget proposal he wants to cut funding from $300 million to $30 million.
“As the shallowest of the Great Lakes, Erie is always under threat,” Brown said.
In the telephone conference, held to promote action against what he called cheating by foreign steel producers such as China, Brown also touched on other subjects. He said that Trump and the Republicans have also targeted LHEAP, which he said will force some senior citizens to choose between buying medicine and heating their homes.
The President has also targeted the Children’s Hospital Training Program, according to Brown, which trains pediatricians. The program has had bipartisan support in the past.
