MOUNT VERNON — The Municipal Planning Commission took the first step in updating the city’s sign code and house numbering system, voting to send a package of changes on to City Council for consideration.

Council will hold a committee meeting on the package Monday, when it will be on the agenda for first reading, and a public hearing is likely at the second meeting in March, on March 26. Development Services manager Lacie Blankenhorn will explain the changes again at the committee meeting.

The idea of updating the sign code was proposed last year by then Board of Zoning Appeals Chair Chris Menapace. Nancy Vail, chair of Council Planning and Zoning Committee, and Blankenhorn, have been working on the package of changes in recent months. Mayor Richard Mavis and Law Director Rob Broeren also became involved in the process at times.
