SPARTA — The Highland Fighting Scots are fighting injuries and illness in their wrestling program.

On Thursday, the high school team fielded wrestlers in all but three weight classes, but had to go with inexperienced youth in others as Highland dropped its home dual with Mount Vernon, 53-18.

Thursday’s event was more than just a dual. It was a gathering of two wrestling programs with plenty of ties.

There were bouts at all levels. The night began at the elementary school level, with Mount Vernon’s Killer Bees facing the Fighting Scots Wrestling Club. Then, the two middle schools faced off on one side of Highland’s gym, while the high school varsity wrestled on the other side.
