MOUNT VERNON — The court of appeals upheld a five year, 11 month prison sentence given to a Mount Vernon woman.

Consecutive sentences brought against Shannon M. Kitts, 38, totaling five years and 11 months were justifiable under laws governing sentencing, according to a Jan. 29 ruling by the Fifth District Court of Appeals.

Kitts was sentenced April 28, 2017, by Knox County Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Wetzel to four consecutive sentences of 15 months on four counts of trafficking in heroin and 11 months on one count of permitting drug abuse.

As opposed to concurrent sentences, which are served all at the same time, consecutive sentences are served one after the other.
