MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Department of Job & Family Services will be hosting pre-service training for anyone interested in becoming a licensed foster care home through the county. Foster parents are needed in Knox County for children in care, to keep them in their communities and schools.

There are 12 different workshops being offered locally for the pre-service training and topics include: Orientation to Foster Care, Adoption and Kinship Care, Childhood Trauma and Its Effects, Transcending Differences in Placement and Helping the Child Manage Emotions and Behaviors.

The workshops will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., starting Feb. 27 through March 15; and each Saturday, March 3 through 17, with sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

There is no charge for the workshops, which will be held in the KCDJFS third floor conference rooms at the Knox County Service Center, 117 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Attendees are asked to use the building entrance off Chestnut Street and doors will open 15 minutes before classes begin.

Reservations to attend any of the training workshops is requested by calling 740-399-3047 or email

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent or for more information about the agency’s foster/adopt program, call 740-399-3047, and begin the process of being a part of a child’s journey.
