MOUNT VERNON — Achieving a more pedestrian-friendly square and west end gateway for downtown Mount Vernon will take a lot of buy-in from the public and private sector.

Main Street Mount Vernon got a look at proposals for Public Square and use of West High Street as a gateway to downtown, as well as a proposal for Norton Street as a corridor to Ariel-Foundation Park, at its annual meeting Thursday. The proposals are part of a study by OHM Advisors and MS Consultants Inc., that also examined re-routing truck traffic on the south end of town away from Public Square.

Jason Sudy, with OHM, said the Public Square project and west end gateway are “doable” in the near future, while traffic projects on the south end of town are much farther away.
