MOUNT VERNON — City Street Department employees were working in advance to get ready for the winter storm expected to hit Friday afternoon.

Street Superintendent Tom Hinkle said 161.74 tons of the 300 tons of salt he had ordered had arrived this week. Since ice was also predicted, he also obtained 90 tons of “salted No. 9s” (fine gravel) and he had it mixed with 90 tons of salt to have 180 tons of mix available to apply to icy areas.

The ice and snow were expected to arrive while the day crew was on duty. A crew of five was to come in and work 4 to midnight, then the day shift will come back and work from midnight to noon. If they are needed, the night crew will come back in and work noon to 4 p.m.
