MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon boys’ basketball team played impressive ball for the second straight night at home with Saturday’s 65-52 victory over old Ohio Capital Conference rival Delaware Hayes.

“We kept our momentum from last night and competed at a high level tonight,” Yellow Jackets’ head coach Nick Coon said. “We played a tough, physical Delaware team in a typical grind-it-out rivalry game.”

An impressive second quarter on both ends of the court was the key to the victory. Mount Vernon (5-4) gave up only one field goal and two free throws in the period, while five of its players scored three or more points apiece for 21 in all. Collin Barteau had two 3-pointers in the period for six points, a total matched by Kaden Daniels, and that left the Jackets, who were tied with the Pacers at 16 in the first quarter, with a huge halftime lead, 37-21.
