Bill Davis/News Alan Cassell, center, speaks to young players during a recent volleyball camp held at the YMCA Sports Center.

MOUNT VERNON — Bailey McKee travels all the way from Bellville to Mount Vernon to play volleyball.

“I like volleyball,” said the 11-year-old. “I like everything about it.”

McKee is in her third year playing volleyball. She’s one of the few with any real experience at the new volleyball camp, which is run weekly at the YMCA Sports Center.

“We want to show kids the basic fundamentals of volleyball,” said camp organizer Alan Cassell. “Every week we see improvement in these kids, which is what our goal is.”

There are eight teams consisting mainly of fifth- and sixth-graders. A few younger kids with prior experience were allowed in to complete the teams. Each team has about eight players, which is enough to make sure everyone gets playing time.
