Joshua Morrison/News The Seventh-Day Adventist City Church, Edgewood Road, has been listed for sale in recent weeks. The church leadership decided to place it on the market due to declining membership. The Hot Meals program has been moved to the Seventh-Day Adventist Elementary school on Sychar Road.

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Academy closed in June 2015, and Mount Vernon City Church on Edgewood Drive was recently sold.

Heidi A. Shoemaker, communication director for Ohio Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, said City Church leadership (not the conference) made the difficult and painful decision to sell the property after much prayer and discussion. She said the decision was not made lightly, but was impacted by declining membership and changing demographics within the Mount Vernon/Knox County community.

“The City Church members have not decided to disband as a church congregation at this time,” she added.

Shoemaker said one of the City Church leaders, Doug Platt, told her, “As far as our future church mission, the Hot Meals and service to our community is our priority.”
