Joshua Morrison/News The Mount Vernon Fire Department placed a white “X” on the former Mazza’s Restaurant on High Street this week. The “X” indicates to fire departments that the building is not habitable and is dangerous. Recently, it was reported the roof on the building has failed.

MOUNT VERNON — If what’s left of the old Mazza’s Restaurant building catches fire, firefighters will not enter the structure except to save a life.

That, explained Fire Chief Chad Christopher, is the essence of the placard with the big “X” that was placed on the building recently.

“It’s really a warning for firefighters that the structure is not safe for normal firefighting activities,” he said. “It’s provided for in the Ohio Fire Code.”
