MOUNT VERNON — Like most of the players on her team, Gwen Stein had never played volleyball before this fall.

Her father had never been a volleyball coach.

Yet, the St. Vincent de Paul fourth-grade volleyball team sits at 10-0, one weekend away from a perfect record.

“We’ve had a lot of great practices,” Stein said. “And, we’ve all been able to communicate.”

The team practices once a week, then plays every Saturday. Sometimes, it’s just one match, sometimes two, depending on the schedule.

The players as a group look forward to everything.

“It’s fun that we get to hang out with our friends after school, and that we get to see each other,” Stein said.

St. Vincent has nine girls on the fourth-grade team this season. Seven of them are attending school there, while two others are part of the Sunday school program through the church. The school doesn’t have fourth-grade teams very often; usually, due to low numbers, they have to combine fourth and fifth grades.
