MOUNT VERNON — A measure to add 40 acres off of North Vernonview Drive in the city to areas where limited bow hunting for deer is permitted, proved controversial Monday.

Lenor Cochran, owner of the property, said the area has become overpopulated with deer, and bowhunting could help clear them out. She said there was bowhunting in the area until a couple years ago.

On the other hand, Craig Schlessinger, a resident nearby, who has seen a tree stand within 100 yards of a house, said modern bows can easily penetrate house walls, and pictured “arrows flying all over the place.” He questioned who would select the hunters.
