Fred Main/News Utica’s Emily Keener (7) spikes the ball past the block attempts of Columbus Cristo Rey’s Chanel Barnett (20) and Anitra Blount (10) during their Division III Sectional final volleyball match Saturday at Utica. The Redskins rolled to a 25-5, 25-7, 25-5 victory.

UTICA — All seniors like to end their career on their home floor with a bang.

For seven senior Utica volleyball players, it was much more than a bang, it was a deafening explosion.

The Redskins cruised to a 25-5, 25-7, 25-5 victory over Columbus Cristo Rey in the Division III Sectional finals Saturday at Utica High School.

“It’s very sentimental (playing at home for the last time),” said senior Morgan McCutcheon. “I think we’ve helped build this program to where it is. We’re close, so this is bittersweet, but we’ve got a long ways to go.”

McCutcheon, Emily Keener, Ashlee Parmer, Katelyn Dunn, Tatum Minton, Rachel Orr and Avery Ellis have been together for six years, playing volleyball at Utica. They’ve been a part of the rebirth of Utica volleyball, as the Redskins have advanced to the district tournament for the fifth straight year.
