MOUNT VERNON — A toy ride in memory of a fallen Danville police officer keeps growing, raising $1,600 more than last year.

The Memorial Toy Ride to Honor Officer Thomas Cottrell, held Oct. 7, raised $14,689.50 for The Salvation Army of Mount Vernon’s annual efforts to bring Christmas joy into the homes of needy families. Last year, the ride raised $13,000, event organizer Kevin Mishey said.

The ride, which started in Mount Vernon, visited Cottrell’s final resting place in Newark for a brief memorial and came back by way of Danville, had 63 motorcycles registered and was also attended by several non-motorcycle participants as well. The event also had multiple sponsors, including food donations for a meal at the end of the ride.
