MOUNT VERNON — Long before Christmas became so commercialized, bejeweled and bedazzled, the season was marked with simpler touches like strands of popcorn, red velvet ribbons, gingerbread men and the glow of white lights.

While 2017 has long surpassed a simpler time, organizers of the Mount Vernon News Christmas Parade hope to dial back the calendar for at least one afternoon and embrace the charm and nostalgia of “An Old-Fashioned Christmas.”

“The theme of an Old-Fashioned Christmas will provide oodles and oodles of ideas for entries,” said News Publisher Kay Culbertson. “The fun of the parade is seeing the children looking at all the amazing floats and seeing the sparkles in their eyes.”

The Christmas Parade and Walk, sponsored by Main Street Mount Vernon, is expected to thrill and delight children of all ages as downtown Mount Vernon is converted into a Christmas wonderland on Sunday, Nov. 26. The Christmas Walk begins at 1 p.m. and will culminate with Caroling for Christ at 5 p.m. on Public Square.

The Christmas Parade will begin to stage at 11 a.m. at Prestress Services Industries, 400 Howard St., Mount Vernon. Judging will take place from 12:45-1:45 p.m. All entries should be checked in no later than 1:45. The parade will start north on South Main Street promptly at 2:30 p.m.

The entry form is available in today’s edition of the News (Page 7), or at 18 E. Vine St., Mount Vernon.

Guests to the Christmas Walk will enjoy family-friendly activities such as the Christmas Carousel and Christmas Train as well as many other additions. Complete details for the event will be published in the News on Wednesday, Nov. 22.

The Christmas Parade/Walk Auction will take place on Thursday, Oct. 26, at Allison’s Finer Diner, 11587 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon. Social gathering begins at 5:30 p.m. with the auction at 6 p.m. Silent auction offerings will include gift baskets from local businesses, unique holiday gift items and gift certificates. The live auction will feature parade category sponsorships. Those interested should RSVP to Carrie Hyman, executive director of Main Street Mount Vernon, by calling 740-393-1481 or by email at director@mainstreetmountvernon.com.
