MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Chamber of Commerce and Corporate Sponsor the Energy Cooperative announce the nominees for the Chamber Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The event will be held Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at the Kenyon Athletic Center.

Each year the Ambassadors of the Chamber of Commerce nominate individuals/businesses in several categories. The 2017 nominees are:

Environmental Sustainability Award

The Environmental Sustainability Award honors the Knox County business or organization that has done most during the past year to introduce sustainable practices into its operations or to promote awareness of sustainable practices and encourage their use. Examples include, but are not limited to, business or organizational commitments to the use of locally grown and raised foods; educational programs at any level; environmentally positive land development; “green” building (especially construction that participates in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system); programs that address clean-air and clean-water issues; ride-sharing and other transportation-related initiatives; and use of less-polluting or non-polluting fuels.

Nominees are Foundation Park Conservancy, Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Rotary Club of Mount Vernon.

Heart Award

The Heart Award is given to a chamber member business recognized for achieving and maintaining architectural design that complements our community.

Nominees are The Alcove Restaurant & Lounge; Kenyon College, Wright Center; and Knox Community Hospital, Hull Business Center.

Quality of Life Award

The Quality of Life Award is awarded to a non-profit chamber member business whose work has enriched the lives of Knox County residents.

Nominees are Area Development Center, The Freedom Center and United Way of Knox County.

Paul Slaughter Volunteer of the Year Award

The Paul Slaughter Volunteer of the Year Award is given to an individual whose business has been a chamber member for at least two years, who consistently volunteers for both chamber and community projects and has contributed to a single unique project in the county within the past two years.

Nominees are Cheri Butcher, First-Knox National Bank; Melanie Bolender; and Tonya Boucher Gallagher, Woodforest National Bank.

Investor in the Future Award

The Investor in the Future Award is given to a chamber member who has demonstrated an investment in the future of Knox County and/or has spearheaded a significant contribution or investment in the youth of Knox County.

Nominees are KSAAT, Knox Substance Abuse Action Team; MTVarts; and Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County.

Women in Business Leadership Award

The Women in Business Leadership Award is given to a chamber member who serves as a role model encouraging women to achieve their full leadership potential.

Nominees are Arlene Griffith, ACS Title & Closing Services; Jan Reynolds, Ariel Foundation; and Kathy Greenich, Knox County Career Center.

Small Business of the Year Award

The Small Business of the Year Award is given to a chamber member business with fewer than 50 employees that has been in operation for more than five years, consistently contributes to both chamber and community projects, has a reputation for integrity and fair business practice, and has demonstrated management or product innovation as well as successful solutions to business issues.

Nominees are Flapper’s Bar & Grille, Heartland Promotional Products, IConn Video Production and Lashley Training Center.

Business of the Year Award

The Business of the Year Award is given to a chamber member business with more than 50 employees that has been in operation for more than five years, consistently contributes to both chamber and community projects, has a reputation for integrity and fair business practice, and has demonstrated management or product innovation as well as successful solutions to business issues.

Nominees are CES Credit Union, The Laurels of Mount Vernon and Ver-Mac Industries.

To be announced at the dinner is the Judy Klavins Ambassador of the Year Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
