MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man charged with falsely accusing police of almost running him over sat on his bike in the middle of the road as three cruisers went by on their way to a burglary in progress, according to police reports released to the News Thursday afternoon.

Eric D. Stump, 54, is charged with false allegation of peace officer misconduct, a first-degree misdemeanor. Stump was arrested on the charge Oct. 10, and was scheduled for arraignment Friday. He was released on a recognizance bond Thursday. As a condition of bond, Stump is to report to Behavior Health Partners for an evaluation.

Stump has not entered a plea to the charge, which essentially states that Stump made a false statement alleging officer misconduct, knowing that the statement was not true.
