MOUNT VERNON — A committee meeting will be held at the Oct. 23 City Council meeting to discuss whether the city wants to join the lawsuit against the plan by the state to collect net-profit income taxes from businesses, then distribute the revenue to the municipality.

The state would deduct a half-percentage point fee for the service.

Mayor Richard Mavis said at his weekly press briefing that he has already sent a letter to State Rep. Rick Carfagna and State Sen. Kris Jordan saying the city opposes the proposed plan, but council would have to decide whether to participate in the suit. Doing so would cost the city about $4,000 on a fee schedule based on population.

The plan is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2018.
