British efforts in Belgium continued as October 1917 arrived, although it is difficult to tell from the news reports how much success those efforts were really having.

Known as the Battle of Broodseinde or the battle of Flanders, it was the third phase of the third battle of Ypres. (The naming of events in this war are often confusing).

The British attack was launched Oct. 4 on a “wide front” and the Associated Press said Field Marshal Douglas Haig was claiming “satisfactory progress,” with advance of half a mile to a mile at various points.
