“ I think scouting is all about serving youth — giving them good experiences, mentoring them and developing our future leaders. I think that will benefit all of us.”

John Thatcher, president Muskingum Valley Council

MOUNT VERNON — The Boy Scouts of America announced Wednesday it will admit girls into the Cub Scouts starting next year, and the News talked with some area individuals about their reaction to the announcement.

Scoutmaster Tom Byrne of Fredericktown Boy Scout Troop 342 said he is not opposed to the concept, but is not sure how having a co-ed group is going to work, especially with possible liability issues with girls having male group leaders.

“It could be complicated,” he added. “The Scouts have been talking about it for decades, though, and we have always had sisters of our Boy Scouts as ‘tag-alongs’ for activities. I think it is going to take moms being involved, maybe as co-leaders.”
