MOUNT VERNON — Ronald G. Godfrey, 84, passed away at the Laurels of Mount Vernon on Oct. 2, 2017. Ron was born at Stumptown, West Virginia, on Oct. 13, 1932, to the late Jack and Beulah (Stump) Godfrey.

He graduated from Calhoun County High School (West Virginia) in 1951 and from Glenville State College (West Virginia) in 1955, where he played four years of varsity football. After a two-year stint in the U.S. Navy, he returned to West Virginia to coach and teach at Wirt County High School. A coaching change took him to Howard/East Knox High School, and he and his wife, Loretta, made Knox County, Ohio, their home.

In the mid-1960s, Ron entered the insurance business and was associated with Kahrl and Company in Mount Vernon for more than 40 years, becoming its president and CEO. Ron was active in the community as a former member of the YMCA Board, Mount Vernon Recreation Board, and was a coach for Little League programs in Elizabeth, West Virginia, and in Howard, Ohio. Ron served a 10-year term on the board of the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County. As a member of Gay Street United Methodist Church, he taught Sunday School and served on various boards.

Ron is survived by his wife of 62 years, Loretta (Poling); two children, Kim (Vic) Cwynar of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and Kyle (Dawn) Godfrey of Maineville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Cole Cwynar, Seth Cwynar, Lauren Godfrey and Yale Godfrey; twin brother, Donald (Barbara) of Weston, West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Roland and Henry, and a sister, Barbara.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, from 3-7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, OH, 43050. A celebration of life service will be held at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St., Mount Vernon, OH, 43050, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017. The family will observe a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a Ron Godfrey scholarship fund at the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 1 S. Main St., Mount Vernon, OH, 43050, to benefit a Knox County athlete.
