MOUNT VERNON — Nellie I. Baker, 93, of Mount Vernon passed away on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at the Country Club Retirement Campus with her loving family by her side.

She was born on April 6, 1924, in Johnstown to the late Leon and Stella (Piper) Smith. Nellie graduated from Hartford High School in Croton Class of 1942. She was employed as a custodian at Kenyon College and retired after 19 years of service in 1989, and was a member of the Northside Church of Christ.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Parker; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; her brothers, Paul (Mary Jane) Smith and Tom (Maxine) Smith; three sisters, Juanita Taylor, Jane Wantland and Esther Sesser; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Baker; her daughter, Carole Grogg; two grandsons, Brad Grogg and Timothy Parker; her brother, Glenn Smith; and her sister Virginia Foreman.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, from 1-2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A service will follow beginning at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bruce Hissong officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Nellie’s name to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Association.
