MOUNT VERNON — A one-month old infant found dead by his father on Sept. 20 died as the result of an attack by a pet dog, according to the Knox County Coroner.
Barrett Hagans died from “extensive blunt and crush force injuries with puncture injuries” inflicted by a male pitbull/pitbull mix, a press release Wednesday from Knox County Coroner Dr. Jennifer Ogle said.
The autopsy, conducted Sept. 21, found no other trauma besides what was inflicted by the dog, Ogle writes. Barrett “was healthy and well taken care of prior to his death,” Ogle writes. She also said the toxicology on the infant is pending.
Barrett’s death was reported by his father at 6:10 a.m. Sept. 20. According to Ogle, Barrett was attacked by the dog while in a bassinet in his father’s bedroom.
The death investigation included examination of the contents of the stomach of the dog, and another dog who was also present in the home. The dogs were ordered euthanized for the examination by a court-ordered search warrant.
The Knox County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has been involved in the investigation. Attempts to contact Prosecuting Attorney Chip McConville were not successful Wednesday morning and it is not known what the status of the investigation is, as of press time.
Also involved in the investigation are the Knox County Dog Warden, Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Bureau of Investigation.
