MOUNT VERNON — Writer Sally Derby will be at Paragraphs Bookstore on Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. until noon.

Derby was born and raised in Dayton. She had a very ordinary life until she learned to read and write. After that, whenever she wasn’t in school, she was either reading or writing herself into exciting and wonderful places. After attending college in Oxford, Ohio, she married and moved to Cincinnati. Derby and her husband are the proud parents of eight sons and one daughter. For the next 30 years or so she has been writing books. Her latest is “A New School Year.”

Derby’s children range from kindergarten to fifth grade. The children voice their concerns about the first day of school. One child is starting a new school; another knows that she will have a male teacher for the first time. The “chapters” include The Night Before, In the Morning, At School, and After School. Each child has a voice and comes to a better understanding of the school year.

Derby will receive a 2017 Ohioana Book Award in Middle Grade/Young Adult Literature for “Jump Back, Paul – The Life and Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar” in October.
