MOUNT VERNON — On a day when televisions all over America were tuning in to the first games of the NFL season, another opener was taking place in Memorial Park.

The Mount Vernon Coed Softball Fall League started up on Sunday, giving players a chance to be active and squeeze the last bit of fun out of summer, as it fades into fall.

Joining the league was one of the first things Brittany Roden did, upon moving back to Mount Vernon. Roden, 23, a Mount Vernon High School graduate, spent the last five years living in Tennessee.
