Joshua Morrison/News Mount Vernon Police and Fire Department responded to a homeless camp fire near the intersection of Maplewood and Fountain streets on Monday afternoon. Small explosions were heard, possibly shotgun shells exploding from the fire. The camp was located between the dike and the Kokosing River.

MOUNT VERNON — Items located in a fire at what appears to be a homeless camp may have been stolen.

A Mount Vernon Police Department report stated that jewelry, a tackle box and a kitchen knife were recovered following investigation of a fire in the area of the 300 block of Fountain Street. The fire was reported at approximately 12:49 p.m., Monday, when a Fountain Street resident reported hearing shots fired and saw smoke in the direction of some nearby woods.

Upon arrival, a camp fire was found “in the early stages of spreading,” according to a MVPD. Mount Vernon Fire Department was summoned and contained the fire.
