MOUNT VERNON — Police called off a search about 90 minutes after issuing a warning Wednesday that a suspect, possibly armed, may be on the loose.

The Mount Vernon Police Department issued a statement on Knox Alerts at approximately 11:06 a.m. warning that a possibly armed suspect may be at large in the north end of town. The suspect had just stolen a car that was believed to have a firearm inside.

However, the firearm had been removed from the vehicle the night before, according to MVPD Capt. Scott McKnight. McKnight said it was determined that the car’s owner, who has a concealed carry permit, was unaware that her boyfriend had removed the firearm.
